The next game from William Attia, a designer renowned for his Eurogames for many years, is set to be released this fall with Greylune, a strategy game based on the original mechanics of Spyrium.
Adventure as the centerpiece
In Greylune, you play as adventurers seeking prestige who will compete over 5 rounds divided into three eras.
To achieve this, you’ll need to gather a variety of items and recruit traveling companions before embarking on the region’s dangerous roads. Here, everything revolves around adventure and your ability to complete heroic quests and resolve epic encounters.
Well-prepared heroes
The village streets are bustling with people. Everyone is on the hunt for the best deals: items that will give you advantages when traveling or help you improve your physical and magical skills, or companions who will offer their skills in a specific area.
For example, Bran will be very helpful in handling your items without having to use one of your precious villagers, while Elwen will allow you to travel farther along the roads.
Build your legend through travel
Every encounter you have during your travels will remain engraved in your memory, becoming a story you can later share in the city’s taverns, granting you that coveted prestige.
Choose your Adventures
Not all your adventures will be equal: while slaying a dragon is a true feat worthy of praise, herding sheep won’t inspire your audience but will ensure a steady income in the fall. It will be up to you—based on your strategy and the available choices—to make the most of the encounter cards.
From placement to withdrawal of workers
You start the game with three loyal villagers who will help you activate the cards of your choice in town, whether it’s retrieving a jade statue or convincing Elwen to join your team.
Place your villagers to the right spots
By placing your villagers between the cards that represent the village, you can show your interest in a particular item, companion, or building. Later, during the summer, you can retrieve your villagers to buy a card or use a building.
Nothing is free – especially not those highly coveted cards!
However, to buy a card or use a building, you’ll have to pay the amount shown on the card, as well as an additional fee for every other villager placed around that card. This can cause prices to skyrocket extremely quickly! And if you don’t have the necessary funds, you still have two options for getting your villager back.
Turn hopeless situations into opportunities
Withdrawing a villager allows you to use a card OR earn coins based on the number of villagers around the targeted card. This means that to refill your pockets, you can always strategically position your villagers while taxing your opponents…
Unique Events
You can also send one of your villagers to participate in the annual event to take advantage of its powerful effect. Some events will have a cost, while others will be free.
A rhythm shaped by the Seasons
Each year in Greylune is divided into four seasons, which each player experiences at their own pace. As a result, there is definitely an asymmetry among the players: one player might still be in spring while another is already in summer. Each season offers a different set of actions; for example, spring allows you to place your villagers, while summer gives you the option to remove them.
Since you can never go back to a past season, you’ll need to think carefully about what you want to do – and whether you want to achieve it before your opponents do.
